Anambra celebrates GHWD
On 18th October 2016 Anambra State became the first in Nigeria to launch a Roadmap to end open defecation. At the annual Global Hand Washing Day celebrations in Awka the State capital Chief Willie Obiano presided over a festive gathering attended by the EU Ambassador and UNICEF representatives as well as local and Federal dignitaries. Chief Willie declared that “The Open Defecation Free (ODF) roadmap aims at delivering a clean environment and reducing the incidence of water-borne diseases.”
At the same event the Governor’s wife Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, was crowned as the state Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Ambassador for Anambra State. As WASH Ambassador, her responsibilities are to seek for increased support for water and sanitation programmes in the state, including the construction of water sources and sanitation facilities and to promote the implementation of the state Open Defecation Free (ODF) roadmap.
The event which was attended by more than one thousand guests was held at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State. Three Ministers, Ambassadors, Business community, Country Representatives and other international development partners were at the event.
